If CapCut generates no captions, check the audible speech, selected source, language and connection before retrying. An error or stuck progress bar alone does not identify the cause.

Quick answer: identify the failure before changing the project

Keep the original project and source files before changing generation settings. Pick the branch that matches what you can observe:

Check the speech, selected source and language

According to CapCut's official auto-caption documentation, caption generation relies on clear audio input, supported language selection, and an active network connection. Perform these three prerequisite checks:

  1. Verify audible speech quality: Auto captions require clear spoken dialogue. Background music, heavy wind noise, severe echo, or overlapping crosstalk can make recognition less accurate. Mute background music tracks temporarily during caption generation.
  2. Select the correct timeline source track: Ensure the audio or video track containing spoken speech is selected and un-muted. If dialogue is on a separate microphone track, verify that the track is enabled in the timeline.
  3. Match the target language: Verify that the language selected in CapCut's caption setup matches the spoken dialect in the video (e.g., selecting English (US) for English speech). A mismatch can produce missing or incorrect text; it is a setting to check, not proof of the cause.

Retry on CapCut Web

CapCut documents a Captions → Auto Captions route on Web. Open the intended project, confirm that its speech is audible, select the spoken language and choose Generate. Menu wording can vary with the interface version.

Keep the page open during the attempt. If it fails, record the error and check your connection. Save the project before refreshing or testing another supported browser. If the job is still active at 99%, use the separate progress checklist rather than repeatedly refreshing.

Retry on CapCut Desktop

CapCut's generation guide uses Captions → Auto Captions on Desktop, followed by language selection and Generate. Its caption-editing guide describes a Text → Auto Captions interface. Follow the caption control shown in your installed version instead of combining both layouts into one menu path.

Confirm the intended video/audio is in the timeline, listen to it and review the language selection before starting. If an attempt fails, retain the error details and save before restarting or updating the app. Do not change firewall settings on the assumption that they caused the failure.

Retry on CapCut Mobile

On mobile, open the project and use Text → Auto Captions. Check the audio source and language options your version provides, then start generation. CapCut documents mobile generation separately from Desktop and Web in its auto-caption help.

Keep a stable connection and check for an official app update if the problem repeats. A restart should follow project preservation. Do not assume an unsaved project or manual caption corrections have already been backed up.

If generation still fails: what to collect for support

If auto captions fail across multiple attempts, collect diagnostic details before submitting an official support ticket:

  • Note your exact platform (Web, Desktop macOS/Windows, Mobile iOS/Android) and software version.
  • Record any specific error text or numeric codes displayed on screen.
  • Test with a short 10-second sample clip containing clear, unobstructed spoken dialogue to compare its behavior with the original. A successful sample narrows the investigation; it does not establish a server outage or a specific cause.

Data Safety Warning: Before clearing application cache, clearing app data, or reinstalling CapCut to resolve stuck processes, ensure your original video files and project backups are saved to prevent accidental data loss.

Review the generated captions

Once captions generate successfully, conduct a complete review pass across all subtitle blocks:

  • Verify proper names, brand terminology, and technical numbers against your original recording.
  • Check that sentence split points occur naturally without cutting off words.
  • For detailed steps on fixing misheard words or adjusting timing, refer to How to Fix Inaccurate Captions in CapCut.

Optional alternative: caption the source video in Cubix

For a separate caption edit, start with your original video in Cubix. Upload the source footage, generate captions and review the wording, timing and placement before exporting the video. See the Cubix caption workflow for the relevant controls.

The editor entry opens Home. It does not transfer a third-party project or automatically upload/import the reader’s files.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there no captions generated if I can clearly hear the audio?

Low voice volume, heavy background music, strong room reverb, or selecting the wrong language setting can prevent speech engines from recognizing audible words. Try isolating the vocal track or turning off background music during caption generation.

What if captions generate successfully but contain incorrect words?

If auto captions appear but mishear specific words or proper names, use manual text correction controls rather than re-generating the entire project. See How to Fix Inaccurate Captions in CapCut.

Do CapCut Web, Desktop, and Mobile use the exact same caption controls?

No. CapCut documents different controls for Web, Desktop and Mobile, and labels can change by version. Follow the controls on your surface and record the version when asking for help.
