Premiere Pro Captions Missing from Export: What to Check

Check the caption track, choose the right caption-delivery mode and inspect the exported video or subtitle file.

Subtitles visible on your Premiere Pro timeline can disappear from your final exported MP4 or MOV file if export caption settings are misconfigured, the active caption track is disabled, or an incompatible file delivery mode is selected.

Quick answer: identify the expected deliverable first

Choose the deliverable first, then inspect its actual export:

DeliveryResultReview
Burn-inText becomes part of the video frames.Play the exported video and inspect placement.
SidecarA separate subtitle/caption file accompanies the video.Deliver both files and test the destination’s subtitle control.
EmbeddedSupported caption data is stored within a supported output format.Verify the format and player/destination requirements.

For permanently visible text, choose the burn-in mode. Sidecar or embedded delivery can be appropriate when viewers need selectable captions.

Comparison of caption delivery modes

Adobe’s caption-export guide documents the three modes and format-specific track restrictions. Burn-in uses video pixels; separate and embedded delivery depend on the destination reading the caption data.

Do not assume every output preset supports embedding or that VTT is an available Premiere sidecar export. Choose a format actually offered by the current export controls and accepted by the destination.

Check sequence, active track and export settings

Select the intended sequence and confirm its caption track is enabled. Open the Export workspace and inspect Captions → Caption Tracks as documented by Adobe.

Check the selected track explicitly when more than one language/track exists. Default selection may choose a different track from the one you intended to deliver.

Documented burned-in export workflow

Open the Export workspace, choose the video preset suitable for the destination and expand its Captions controls. Choose the available burn-in option, confirm the intended caption tracks and export a short review copy first.

Play that copy outside Premiere. Check the first/middle/last captions, line breaks and whether text is cropped. Only then export the full deliverable with those settings. Menu labels can vary by release.

Sidecar and embedded delivery requirements

For sidecar delivery, select the separate-file option and a destination-supported format, such as SRT when available. Adobe documents one caption stream per SRT file; check the track selection and output folder.

For embedding, confirm that both the caption standard and output container/preset support it. Adobe lists CEA-608, CEA-708 and OP-47 restrictions; availability is not established merely because the video uses MP4 or MOV. Use the controls actually available for your sequence and test the intended player.

Inspect output in intended player

Timeline preview visibility does not guarantee final export delivery. Test your exported file outside Premiere Pro:

  • For Burned-in videos: Open the MP4 file in a standard video player (e.g., VLC or QuickTime) and confirm text appears visually on screen.
  • For Sidecar files: Confirm that an .srt file with an identical filename was created in your output destination folder.
  • For Web Uploads: Upload the video to your target platform (YouTube, LinkedIn, or Vimeo) and verify that closed captions are enabled in platform player settings.

Symptom checklist and illustrative delivery choice

SymptomCheck
Text in timeline, none in exported videoConfirm whether burn-in, sidecar, embedded or no caption delivery was selected.
Missing sidecarConfirm the selected track, format, export completion and destination folder.
Sidecar exists, text absent in playerLoad/enable it in a supporting player; verify timing and destination format support.
Text cropped or unreadableInspect caption styling/placement and the actual output dimensions.

Illustrative choice: a promo requiring permanently visible text can use burn-in. A language-selectable player needs a supported separate or embedded delivery route. These are delivery decisions, not tested exports from this article.

Frequently asked questions

Why are captions visible in Premiere preview but missing in my MP4 file?

Premiere Pro's timeline preview displays active caption tracks for editing purposes. If the Export mode Captions tab is set to "None" or "Create Sidecar File", the video stream will render without burned-in text.

Does an SRT sidecar file retain font colors and positioning?

SRT primarily transfers text and timing. Some players recognize limited formatting, but it does not reproduce Premiere’s full caption design. Review styling in the destination; burn-in preserves the appearance as video pixels.

Optional Cubix workflow

For a separate caption edit, start with your original video in Cubix. Upload the source footage, generate captions and review the wording, timing and placement before exporting the video. See the Cubix caption workflow for the relevant controls.

The editor entry opens Home. It does not transfer a third-party project or automatically upload/import the reader’s files.
