Frequently Asked Questions
Which platforms are covered?
Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest — covering profile pictures, cover photos, posts, stories, and more for each.
How current are the size specs?
The dimensions reflect each platform's current recommended sizes, including aspect ratio, so your uploads display sharp and uncropped.
Can I search across all platforms at once?
Yes. Use the search box to find a placement by keyword — like 'cover', 'story', or 'thumbnail' — across every platform in the guide.
Why does aspect ratio matter?
Uploading the wrong aspect ratio means the platform will crop your image automatically, often cutting off important parts. Matching the exact spec avoids that.
What size should an Instagram post be?
Pick Instagram in the platform dropdown to see all five placements. Square Post is 1080x1080 at 1:1, Portrait Post is 1080x1350 at 4:5, Landscape Post is 1080x566 at 1.91:1, and Story or Reel is 1080x1920 at 9:16. Portrait 4:5 takes up the most feed space, so it is the usual choice for reach.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280x720 pixels at 16:9, which is the Video Thumbnail placement under YouTube. Design at that exact size so text stays readable when the thumbnail is scaled down to a few hundred pixels wide in the sidebar and on mobile.
What are the dimensions for a YouTube banner or channel art?
Upload at 2560x1440 pixels at 16:9, listed as Channel Banner under YouTube. The banner is cropped differently on TV, desktop, and mobile, so keep your logo and text inside the centred 1546x423 safe area and it will survive every crop.
Why does Instagram or Facebook crop my photo?
Both platforms fit uploads into a fixed aspect ratio, so anything taller or wider gets trimmed to match. Look up the placement here, then export at that exact ratio before uploading and no crop is applied.
Is there one image size that works on every platform?
There is no single size that is ideal everywhere, but 1080x1080 at 1:1 is the safest all-round post size because every platform accepts a square without heavy cropping. For anything vertical, 1080x1920 at 9:16 covers Stories, Reels, Shorts, and TikTok in one export.
What size is a LinkedIn banner or cover photo?
A personal profile cover is 1584x396 at 4:1, and a company page cover is 1128x191 at 5.91:1. They are different shapes, so using the personal size on a company page is the most common reason a LinkedIn banner looks stretched or cropped.
How do I find the size for a platform that is not listed?
The guide covers Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest. For anything else, match the closest placement by shape: vertical video is almost always 1080x1920 at 9:16, a feed post is 1080x1080 at 1:1, and a wide banner is 16:9. Those three ratios cover most platforms.
Can I save the specs for a design file?
Yes. Every placement can be downloaded as a small text spec sheet with the platform, placement, pixel dimensions, and aspect ratio, so you can keep it alongside your Photoshop, Figma, or Canva file.
Is the Social Media Image Size Guide free?
Yes. It is completely free with no signup, no login, and no limits. Look up any platform and placement instantly.
