Create your first project

Learn how to open a new project space, configure aspect ratios, and organize your workspace.

What this does

A project is one workspace holding your source media, your timeline, your captions and everything Cubix has done to the edit. Keeping one video per project is what makes uploads, edit history and exports easy to find later.

Set the aspect ratio early

You can change it at any point by asking Cubix or adjusting the canvas, but changing the frame moves everything on screen. Captions and overlays you positioned by hand may need adjusting again, so it is cheapest to decide before you start styling.

How to do it

Follow these step-by-step instructions in Cubix.

1

Open the dashboard and start a new project

Log in and click '+ New Project' in the top right of your project library. Existing projects stay listed here, so you can come back to an edit at any time.

2

Give it a name you will recognise

Name it after the video, not the date — 'Podcast Episode 14 — Clips' beats 'Untitled 3'. This matters more than it sounds: your project name becomes the default filename when you export, so naming it properly now saves you typing it again later.

3

Choose your aspect ratio

Pick where the video is going. 16:9 landscape for YouTube, embedded web video and anything widescreen. 9:16 vertical for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. 1:1 square for LinkedIn and general feed placement, which crops less than vertical while still reading well on a phone.

4

Enter the workspace

Create the workspace and you land on the editor: canvas in the middle, the timeline below, the quick edit rail alongside, and the Ask Cubix chat ready for your first request.

5

Get your bearings

The panels are grouped by intent. Media holds your uploads plus stock video and images. Text covers titles and subtitles. Visuals covers looks, elements, stickers and backgrounds. Audio covers music, volume, voiceover and generated tracks. Polish covers colour, speed, zoom, framing, privacy blurring and Magic Edits. Extras holds Quick Build and Markers.

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • One video per project. Cutting three different videos in one timeline makes every later request ambiguous about which one you mean.
  • If you are producing the same content for several platforms, edit the long-form version first and pull the vertical clips from it rather than starting a separate project.
  • Projects save continuously in the background, so there is no save button to remember and nothing lost if your browser closes.
  • Starting from a still? Animate Photo turns a single image into a short moving clip, with controls for style, time on screen, framing and motion strength.

Cloud storage is a total concurrent limit rather than a monthly allowance, so deleting finished projects and their uploads frees that space back up straight away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions around this editing workflow.

Pick the destination, not the source. 16:9 for YouTube and embedded web video, 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 1:1 for LinkedIn and general feed placement. A widescreen recording converts to any of them later.
