Editing Existing Footage vs Generating an AI Video

Start with what you already have and what the finished video must show.

A common point of confusion in modern video production is the difference between editing real recorded footage with AI and generating synthetic video from text prompts. Choose around the material you have and the changes you need. Editing and generation can also be combined in the same project.

Video editing begins with authentic camera recordings, audio tracks, or screen captures. Its purpose is to trim, structure, pace, and enhance material that already exists. Video generation (such as text-to-video synthesis via tools like Adobe Firefly) creates new visual material from supported prompts or references. Many creators also combine both approaches into a hybrid workflow, using generated B-roll clips to support a real recorded interview.

Input and output comparison table

Production DimensionAI Video EditingGenerative AI VideoHybrid Workflow
Starting InputsRecorded video clips, microphone audio, screen captures.Text prompts and supported image, frame or video references.Recorded footage + text prompts for supplemental visuals.
Primary ObjectivePacing, structuring, and polishing real human communication.Synthesizing novel visual scenes, animations, or conceptual shots.Enhancing a real human narrative with illustrative supporting visuals.
Preserved ElementsUses recorded speech and visuals; cuts, crops and effects still need review. Can be guided by source references; fidelity must be checked.Authentic speaker audio and face on primary narrative track.
Creative ControlRecorded material has adjustable edit boundaries; AI can choose the wrong cut or crop.Probabilistic: visual details, motion speed, and consistency vary.High control over speech narrative; probabilistic control over B-roll.
Review FocusSpeech continuity, natural breath gaps, caption accuracy, narrative rhythm.Visual artifacts, distorted anatomy, physical consistency, prompt fidelity.Visual coherence between real camera shots and generated clips.

Three illustrative production scenarios

To understand when each workflow is appropriate, consider these three typical creative briefs:

1. Authentic Customer Case Study or Founder Message

  • Scenario: A client explains what changed after adopting your software.
  • Workflow: Pure Video Editing.
  • Why: The job is to present what this client actually said. Keep the original recording as evidence, preserve qualifications and check that cuts do not create a different claim. Generated supporting visuals would need to be distinguishable from the client’s actual experience.

2. Conceptual Visual Metaphor or Fantasy Sequence

  • Scenario: An ad agency needs a 5-second cinematic shot of a glowing futuristic data network expanding over a dark planet.
  • Workflow: Generative AI Video.
  • Why: The requested scene was not filmed. Generation is one way to create an illustrative shot; review whether the result communicates the intended idea and fits the surrounding video.

3. Technical Explainer with Visual Cutaways

  • Scenario: An educator records a screen tutorial explaining cloud server redundancy, but needs cutaway visuals to illustrate server data transfers.
  • Workflow: Hybrid Combination.
  • Why: The primary screen capture and voiceover are edited with an AI video editor for timing and clarity. Generative tools create short, abstract 3-second graphic cutaways that are placed on top of the edited timeline as B-roll.

Key selection criteria: how to choose

When planning your video, evaluate these four criteria:

  1. Speaker Authenticity: If viewers need to trust a real human being (in testimonials, leadership updates, or journalism), you must edit authentic footage.
  2. Factual Accuracy: If you are demonstrating software interfaces, physical products, or procedural steps, generative video cannot be relied upon to render accurate button layouts or physical mechanics.
  3. Temporal Consistency: Compare the speaker’s appearance and scene continuity across the sequence. Recorded footage gives you a source to check; generated references can guide appearance and composition but do not remove the need for review.
  4. Revision Precision: An editor’s timeline controls let you adjust source boundaries within its supported precision. That does not guarantee an AI request chooses the right boundary. Generation may support references or targeted changes; inspect what changed and what remained.

Adobe documents video composition references and start/end frame guidance. These are generation controls, not proof that every detail will match your reference.

Review checklist for edited vs generated video

Before finalizing your media, follow the appropriate inspection checklist:

  • For Edited Recorded Footage:
    • Confirm speech meaning was not distorted by aggressive silence trimming.
    • Check audio crossfades across cut points to eliminate room-tone clicks.
    • Verify that automated captions spell technical terminology and names correctly.
  • For Generated Synthetic Clips:
    • Inspect hands, faces, and backgrounds for warping, melting, or anatomical artifacts.
    • Check whether camera motion feels physically plausible and smooth.
    • Ensure color grading and resolution match the surrounding project footage.

Optional Cubix workflow

If you already have recorded footage and want to clean, structure, and polish it without manual timeline fatigue:

  1. Open Cubix and upload your recorded footage.
  2. Use Ask Cubix to describe the pacing, takes and captions you want, including what must remain.
  3. Review your timeline draft and export your finished video.
