How does the frequency to note conversion work?

The tool uses 12-tone equal temperament math to find the nearest musical note to any frequency, based on how many semitones it is from your reference pitch (A4, 440 Hz by default).

What are 'cents'?

A cent is 1/100th of a semitone. The cents value shows how far your frequency is from the nearest note's exact pitch — 0 is perfectly in tune, negative is flat, positive is sharp.

Can I change the reference pitch?

Yes. While A4 = 440 Hz is the modern standard, some orchestras and instruments tune to 442 Hz or other values. Enter any reference pitch and the note detection adjusts accordingly.

What octave numbering is used?

Scientific pitch notation, where middle C is C4 and A4 = 440 Hz sits in the same octave.

What note is 440 Hz?

A4, the standard tuning reference for most modern music. It is the note an orchestra tunes to and the pitch a guitar's fifth string is set from.

What frequency is middle C?

261.63 Hz in standard A440 tuning, written C4 in scientific pitch notation. Enter 261.63 and the tool returns C4 at 0 cents.

How many Hz is one semitone?

It is a ratio, not a fixed number of Hz, so the gap grows as pitch rises. One semitone multiplies the frequency by the twelfth root of two, about 1.0595, so a semitone above 440 Hz is 466.16 Hz, a jump of 26 Hz, while the same semitone down at 110 Hz is only about 6.5 Hz wide.

What note is my kick drum or bass resonance?

Read the peak frequency off your spectrum analyser and enter it here. A 50 Hz fundamental comes back as G1 about 35 cents sharp, and 100 Hz comes back as G2 about 35 cents sharp. Knowing the note lets you tune the kick to the song key instead of guessing at the EQ.

What note is the hum in my recording?

Mains hum at 50 Hz is close to G1, and at 60 Hz it sits almost exactly between Bb1 and B1. Enter the frequency to get the nearest note and cents, which tells you whether a notch filter will land on a musical note in your track or safely between two.

Should I tune to 440 or 442 Hz?

440 Hz is the modern standard and what you should use unless told otherwise. Many European orchestras tune to 442 or 443 for a slightly brighter sound. Set the reference pitch field to whichever you need and every note frequency shifts with it, so at A442 a 440 Hz tone reads as A4 about 8 cents flat.

Why is 432 Hz different from 440 Hz?

432 Hz tuning puts A4 about 32 cents, roughly a third of a semitone, below the standard. There is no acoustic evidence it sounds objectively better, but if you are working with 432 material set the reference pitch to 432 so the note names and cents readings match your project.

How many cents off is acceptable when tuning?

Within about 5 cents is generally inaudible on a single note, and most tuners treat anything under 5 cents as in tune. Beyond roughly 10 to 15 cents the drift becomes noticeable, especially against a sustained chord or a piano.

Is middle C called C3 or C4?

C4 in scientific pitch notation, which is what this tool uses. Some DAWs and synths label it C3 instead, so if a note name here reads one octave higher than your instrument shows, that naming difference is why, and the frequency is still correct.
