Frequently Asked Questions
What scale types are supported?
Major, natural minor, major pentatonic, and minor pentatonic — the most commonly used scales in songwriting, improvisation, and music theory study.
Does the tool use sharps or flats?
It automatically picks the conventional spelling for the key — flat keys like F, Bb, and Eb use flats, while sharp keys use sharps, matching how the scale would be written on paper.
What notes are in C major?
C, D, E, F, G, A, and B, with no sharps or flats. Select C and Major to see them laid out, or pick any of the 17 keys to get the same for that key.
What notes are in A minor?
A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. It uses the same seven notes as C major but starts on A, which is why A minor is called the relative minor of C major.
What is a pentatonic scale used for?
Pentatonic scales use 5 notes instead of 7 and are widely used in guitar solos, blues, and rock improvisation because almost any combination of notes sounds musical.
What notes are in E minor pentatonic?
E, G, A, B, and D. It is the first scale most guitarists learn for soloing, because dropping the two notes that natural minor adds removes the ones most likely to clash over a rock or blues backing.
What is the difference between a major and a minor scale?
The third note. A major scale has a major third above the root and sounds bright, a natural minor scale has a minor third one semitone lower and sounds darker. Generate C Major and C Natural Minor one after the other and you can see exactly which notes change.
What is the formula for a major scale?
Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half, counting in semitones from the root. Every major scale in every key uses that same pattern, which is what this tool applies to work out the notes.
How do I find the relative minor of a key?
Count down three semitones from the major root, or up to the sixth note of the major scale. For C major that gives A minor. Generate C Major, take the sixth note, then generate that root as Natural Minor and you will see the note list matches.
Which scale is used in blues?
Minor pentatonic is the backbone. Generate the minor pentatonic in your key, then add the flattened fifth as a passing note for the full six-note blues scale. In A minor pentatonic that means adding Eb to A, C, D, E, G.
Does F major use sharps or flats?
Flats. F major contains one flat, Bb, so it is written F, G, A, Bb, C, D, E and never A#. The tool picks the conventional spelling for each key automatically, so flat keys come back with flats and sharp keys with sharps, matching how the scale would appear on paper.
Can I print or save a scale chart for practice?
Yes. Download a text sheet with the key, the scale type, and every note in order, so you can print it or keep it on your phone while practising.
Is the Music Scale Finder free?
Yes. It is completely free with no signup, no login, and no limits. Pick a key and scale to see every note instantly.
