Clipchamp Project or Media Not Loading: What to Check

Separate a whole-project loading problem from one failing media file, then check source availability and the appropriate recovery steps.

If Clipchamp cannot load a project or an individual asset, first check whether the original media is available and whether the problem affects one file or the whole project. A spinner or warning alone does not establish a codec, storage or account failure.

Quick answer and symptom diagnostic table

SymptomUseful first check
One missing assetLocate the exact original or its backup; reconnect storage if needed.
One file stuck during importInspect the source file and supported formats before converting a copy.
Whole project stuck loadingPreserve sources; check account, connection and the app/browser state.
Project opens but export failsUse the export checklist.

Make one change at a time and note the result. Do not delete the project as a diagnostic step.

Locate and retain original source files first

Clipchamp relies on local file references or cloud synchronization to stream media into your timeline. Protect your original media:

  1. Do not delete original files: Confirm that your original video recordings, camera files, and audio tracks remain stored on your computer's local hard drive.
  2. Check file paths: If source files were stored on an external USB drive or network folder that was disconnected, reconnect the drive before opening the project.
  3. Avoid clearing site data prematurely: Keep originals before advanced site-data clearing, which can purge editing/processing files and require relinking. Clearing cached images/files is a different operation.

Account distinctions: personal vs work/school

Microsoft’s loading guide explains why original-media availability matters. Personal-account projects may require relinking when sources are unavailable and content backup was not enabled. Do not assume a project listing means every source file is backed up.

Work-account media is retrieved from organizational OneDrive storage; check the right signed-in account, file availability and permissions. Do not treat personal content backup as the same storage feature. Follow your organization’s access process when a cloud file is unavailable.

One failing asset: formats, sizes and conversion

Try opening the full source in a standalone player and check that any cloud copy has downloaded completely. Playback is a useful test, not proof that every frame or codec will work in Clipchamp.

Microsoft recommends MP4 or WebM for faster import and accepts many other containers, sometimes with automatic conversion. Use the unsupported-file checklist instead of assuming MKV, AVI or VOB is rejected.

If one file still fails, obtain it again from its source or test a converted MP4 copy. Compare duration, audio, framing and quality; keep the original untouched.

Whole project that will not open

After retaining your originals, try a normal refresh or app restart and reopen the intended project. Check for an app/browser update and close unnecessary applications/tabs. Confirm you are signed into the account that owns the project.

Use Microsoft’s current loading guidance for further browser checks. Avoid clearing cookies or site data as an initial step, and do not assume an Incognito window contains the cached media used by the original session.

Relinking missing media files

Follow Clipchamp’s prompt to locate the missing asset and select the matching original from its actual storage location. Keep filenames and media identity clear; an unrelated file with the same name is not a safe replacement.

After relinking, inspect all affected timeline positions. Do not assume every neighboring file has also been restored just because one clip now plays.

Advanced cache and site data steps

Microsoft distinguishes cached images and files from site-data clearing. Its loading guide places site-data clearing among advanced steps and warns that it purges editing/processing files and may require relinking.

Before considering it, locate the original video, audio and image files outside Clipchamp and confirm any applicable backup. Follow the current official steps for your browser/account rather than selecting every browsing-data category. Reopen the project and review every source reference afterward. If originals are missing, stop and investigate backups before deleting local data.

Reopening review, support evidence and FAQ

Once your project loads successfully:

  • Scrub through your timeline to ensure all audio tracks, visual overlays, and text captions align correctly.
  • Keep a reviewed project copy and the original media; a copy does not guarantee future loading or sync behavior.
  • For export troubleshooting after loading succeeds, see Clipchamp Export Stuck or Failing.

If media loading failures persist, collect operating system version, browser build, account type, and exact error text for Microsoft technical support.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Clipchamp say "Locate your assets"?

This warning appears when Clipchamp cannot find the local video files on your computer. This happens if files were moved to a different folder, renamed, deleted, or stored on an unplugged USB drive.

Can I recover a Clipchamp project if original media files were deleted?

If original files were permanently deleted from your computer and Content Backup was not enabled in your personal account, the project may not have a recoverable media copy. Check device/cloud backups or the original source; project instructions alone do not reconstruct deleted footage.

Optional fresh Cubix edit using original media

For a separate edit in Cubix, start with your original footage. Upload the source media, make the intended changes and inspect the exported video. See Cubix export instructions for that workflow.

The editor entry opens Home. It does not transfer a third-party project or automatically upload/import the reader’s files.
