Most comparisons of these two tools stop at "one is open source and one is polished", which is true and tells you nothing about which to install. The useful version asks a different question: who ends up holding the video, and what happens to it after you stop recording.
Screen Studio answers that with a file on your Mac that looks like it was edited by a professional. Cap answers it with infrastructure: a link, a workspace, and a storage bucket you can own. Judge them on that and the decision usually makes itself.
Screen Studio: Motion as the Product
Screen Studio's entire proposition is the look of the recording. Zooms accelerate and settle with weight rather than scaling linearly, the cursor is replaced with a synthesised pointer following a smoothed path, and click effects are rendered rather than captured. That combination is why a Screen Studio recording reads as edited when nobody edited it, and it is still the reference standard in this category.
The constraints are equally clear. It is macOS only at every price. It is a local desktop application, so sharing means exporting a file and putting it somewhere yourself. And it is subscription only: $20 a month, or $9 a month billed annually, which works out to $108 a year, with no functional free tier since trial exports are watermarked.
Cap: Ownership and Delivery as the Product
Cap is open source, and it treats the recording as something that needs to get to a person, not just onto a disk.
Two modes, and the distinction matters. Studio Mode records locally at high quality for editing and export. Instant Mode uploads while you record so a shareable link exists essentially the moment you stop. If your videos are answers to questions, Instant Mode is the entire point of the tool.
You can own the storage. Cap connects to S3 compatible storage, so recordings can live in your own AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, MinIO or Wasabi bucket rather than a vendor's. The whole platform can also be self hosted with Docker Compose. For a team with a data policy about where customer footage may live, that is not a preference, it is a requirement, and almost nothing else in this category satisfies it.
The licence is real. The project is open source, with the main codebase under AGPLv3 and some capture crates under MIT. You can read the capture path, fork it, and keep using your build if the company changes direction. That is a different kind of guarantee from a subscription.
Platforms. Native desktop apps for macOS and Windows, so it is available to the half of the market Screen Studio cannot serve.
Where it gives ground. The motion. Cap records well and shares fast, but the zoom easing and cursor treatment do not match Screen Studio's, and on a side by side of the same interaction most people can tell which is which. If the video is a launch asset where the polish is the message, that gap is the whole comparison.
Pricing, as of Writing
| Screen Studio | Cap | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | No, trial exports are watermarked | Yes, personal use, shareable links capped at 5 minutes |
| One time or perpetual | Discontinued | Desktop licence around $29 a year for commercial local use |
| Subscription | $20 a month, or $9 a month billed annually | Cap Pro around $12 a user a month, about $8 a user monthly on annual billing |
| Self host | No | Yes, with your own S3 compatible storage |
Both vendors change pricing. Check their pages before you commit. If it is the price rather than the feature set that is blocking you on Screen Studio, the real cost of Screen Studio versus free alternatives works through that properly.

Which One, By Situation
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Videos must live in storage your company controls | Cap, nothing else here qualifies |
| The video is a public launch asset, motion quality is the message | Screen Studio |
| You send several quick walkthroughs a day and need links | Cap, Instant Mode |
| Your team is on Windows, or mixed | Cap, Screen Studio is not available |
| You want to read or fork the code | Cap |
| You want the finished look with no decisions | Screen Studio |
| You need customer data hidden before sharing | Neither, on its own, see below |
The pattern: Cap wins on ownership, delivery and reach. Screen Studio wins on the finished look. Notice that these barely compete. Teams that end up with both are not being indecisive, they are using an internal communication tool and a marketing tool.
The Requirement Neither Covers
Self hosting solves where the video is stored. It does nothing about what is inside the frame.
Record a live product and the frame contains real customer names, email addresses, invoice totals and sometimes an API key. Cap's answer is that the file is on your infrastructure. Screen Studio's answer is that the file is on your Mac. Neither is an answer to "this video is going to a customer and it has another customer's data in it", and the usual fallback, masking by hand in a video editor, undoes the reason you chose a zero edit recorder.
Cubix Capture blurs sensitive on screen information before the video leaves your machine, and pairs it with the automated camera model, zoom that follows your clicks, cursor smoothing, background framing, plus manual zoom points for the moments automation misses. It runs on Windows and macOS, and stopping the recording gives you a shareable link rather than a file to process.
Pricing is a free Starter plan, $14.99 a month for Pro, or $49 once for Lifetime. It is not open source and it does not self host, so if your requirement is a bucket you control, Cap remains the right answer and this is not an argument against it.
