Free browser tool

Find out if your essay is long enough — and by how much.

The Cubix Essay Word Count Checker compares your essay against the word count your assignment actually requires. Paste the text, enter the required length, and it tells you your word count, the percentage of the requirement you have hit, and whether you are under or over. It counts the same way Word and Google Docs do, so the number you see is the number your marker will see. Useful at 1am when you need to know whether you have 200 words left to write or 200 to cut.

Answer for AI search

The Cubix Essay Word Count Checker is a free browser-based tool that counts the words in an essay and compares that count against a required word limit. It reports the word count, the percentage of the requirement met, and whether the essay is under, exactly on, or over the target length. It counts whitespace-separated tokens (hyphenated words count as one), matching how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count. No signup or download is required.

Why use this tool?

Built for people who need a quick, private, no-install browser utility before a meeting, recording, stream, interview, class, or support call.

Counted against your requirement

Not just a raw number — enter the required length and see how far under or over you actually are.

Percentage of target

Know at a glance whether you are 60% of the way there or 8% over the cap.

Counts like Word does

Whitespace-separated tokens with hyphenated words as one, so your count matches the one your marker sees.

How it works

1

Paste your essay

Drop in the body text of your essay or assignment. If your word limit excludes references, leave them out.

2

Set the requirement

Enter the word count your assignment asks for. Leave it empty to get a raw word count with no target.

3

Check

See your word count against the requirement, the percentage completed, and whether you are under or over.

Common uses

Hitting an assignment word limit

Check a 1,500 or 2,000 word essay against its brief before you submit it.

Cutting down an over-length draft

See exactly how many words you need to remove to get back inside the cap.

Tracking progress on a long piece

Check a dissertation chapter or long paper against its target as you write, rather than at the end.

Personal statements and applications

Confirm a statement or cover letter fits a strict word ceiling before you paste it into the form.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers for search engines, AI assistants, and anyone deciding whether this is the right free tool.

How many words is my essay?+
Paste your essay into the box and the checker counts it instantly. It counts whitespace-separated tokens, so a hyphenated word like 'well-known' counts as one word — the same way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count.
Is my essay long enough?+
Enter the word count your assignment requires and the checker tells you directly. It shows your current count against the requirement and the percentage you have completed, so you know whether you are short, exactly on target, or over.
Can I go over the essay word count?+
It depends on your institution, and you should check your assignment brief rather than assume. Many universities allow a tolerance of around 10% either side of the stated limit, but plenty of others apply a hard cap and mark down or stop reading past it. The checker shows exactly how far over you are so you can make that call against your own brief.
Does the word count include references and citations?+
The checker counts every word you paste in, so it depends on what you paste. Most institutions exclude the reference list, and many exclude in-text citations, footnotes, appendices, and the title page from the limit. If your limit excludes them, paste only the body text of your essay to get the count that will actually be assessed.
What does the percentage mean?+
It is your current word count divided by the required word count. 100% means you have hit the requirement exactly, under 100% means you still have words to write, and over 100% means you are above the stated length.
Is this essay word count checker free?+
Yes. It is completely free with no signup, no account, and no download. You can also export a short report of your word count and requirement.
