Frequently Asked Questions

How many bytes are in a kilobyte?

In decimal (SI) units, 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. In binary units, 1 KiB (kibibyte) = 1,024 bytes. Most operating systems and storage manufacturers use the decimal convention when reporting file sizes.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB (megabyte) = 1,000,000 bytes. MiB (mebibyte) = 1,048,576 bytes (1024²). This tool uses the decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) convention, which is the most common for file size display.

How large is a terabyte?

1 TB = 1,000 GB = 1,000,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 KB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Modern hard drives and SSDs are commonly sold in terabyte capacities.

Why does my file look smaller in MB than in MiB?

Because decimal MB divides by 1,000 while binary MiB divides by 1,024. A 1,048,576-byte file is exactly 1 MiB but about 1.05 MB. This converter shows the decimal value used by most file managers.
