OBS Video Quality Bad - Best Settings to Fix

Is your OBS Studio recording looking blurry or blocky? Learn how to fix bad video quality by tuning encoders, bitrates, resolutions, and colors.

"Bad quality" is the vaguest video complaint there is, and it is vague on purpose, because at least four different faults all read as "bad" at a glance. Before you touch a single setting, spend 30 seconds naming which one you actually have, because the fix for each is different:

If it is a mix of these, or you would simply rather set OBS up correctly once so none of them happen, you are in the right place. This is the full settings pass, encoder, bitrate, resolution, and colour, in the order that matters. Get these four right and OBS records clean the first time.

Step 1: Switch to a Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoder

By default, OBS often points its video encoding engine to a software profile called x264. This forces your computer's main Central Processing Unit (CPU) to handle every ounce of intense real-time video compression math. If your CPU gets overwhelmed by background tasks, it will aggressively drop visual detail to keep up, ruining your video quality.

Modern graphics cards feature a completely separate, dedicated physical silicon chip designed exclusively for video encoding. Shifting the burden to this chip instantly cleans up your visual clarity.

  1. Navigate to Output Settings: Open internal platform configurations. Launch OBS Studio, click on Settings in the bottom-right control corner, and select the Output tab from the left sidebar. Change the Output Mode dropdown at the top from Simple to Advanced.

  2. Modify Your Video Encoder Selection: Offload compression math from your CPU kernel. Locate the Video Encoder dropdown under the Recording or Streaming tab. If it reads x264, change it immediately to your graphics hardware's dedicated encoder chip:

  • NVIDIA NVENC H.264 (If running an NVIDIA graphics card)
  • AMD HW H.264 (If running an AMD graphics card)
  • Intel QuickSync H.264 (If running an Intel setup)
  • Apple VT H.264 Hardware (If recording on an Apple Silicon Mac)
  1. Configure the Rate Control Profile: Establish the perfect data allocation strategy. Locate the Rate Control dropdown.
  • For Streaming: Set this to CBR (Constant Bitrate) and push your bitrate to at least 6000 Kbps (if your internet upload speed allows).
  • For Local Recording: Switch this dropdown completely to CQP (Constant Quality).
  1. Tune the Quality Target Metric: Define the target visual compression baseline. If you activated CQP for recording, set the CQ Level input field between 16 and 20. A setting of 18 acts as the golden baseline, delivering pristine, near-lossless video quality without generating massive, bloated files. Click Apply.

Step 2: Establish Perfect 1:1 Canvas Resolution Match

The second biggest culprit behind fuzzy, low-quality video is resolution downscaling. If OBS captures your display at a high baseline layout but downscales the output size to save storage space, the software must discard pixels arithmetically, causing severe text distortion and blurring.

  • Go to the Video tab in OBS Settings.
  • Set your Base (Canvas) Resolution to match your monitor's native display layout metrics perfectly (e.g., 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440).
  • Set your Output (Scaled) Resolution to the exact same numbers. Keeping these values identical ensures a 1:1 pixel match, keeping application borders, code tracks, and text perfectly sharp.
  • If your setup requires you to downscale your output resolution due to weak system hardware, make sure the Downscale Filter is changed to Lanczos (Sharpened scaling, 36 samples) to minimize details bleeding together.

Step 3: Calibrate the Advanced Color Settings

If your video details are sharp but the overall colors look flat, washed out, or artificially dark, your advanced video color space parameters are out of alignment.

  • Navigate to the Advanced tab in the left sidebar menu.
  • Under the Video header block, ensure your Color Format dropdown is set to NV12 (the universal standard for web video pipelines).
  • Change your Color Space to Rec. 709 (the baseline standard for modern high-definition display rendering).
  • Switch your Color Range from Full to Limited. While "Full" sounds superior, most media players and platforms cannot read full RGB files correctly; they will stretch the spectrum values, turning your rich shadows into a muddy gray wash.
