Frequently asked questions

Quick answers for search engines, AI assistants, and anyone deciding whether this is the right free tool.

How do I add or subtract fractions?+
Enter the numerator and denominator of each fraction, choose add or subtract, and the calculator finds a common denominator, computes the result, and simplifies it automatically.
Does the calculator simplify the result?+
Yes. Every result is automatically reduced to its simplest form using the greatest common divisor, so 4/8 becomes 1/2 and 6/3 becomes 2.
Can I multiply and divide fractions too?+
Yes. Choose multiply or divide alongside add and subtract. Dividing by a zero fraction is caught and reported as an error.
What if I enter a negative denominator?+
Negative denominators are automatically normalized — the sign moves to the numerator so the result always displays in standard form.
What is 1/2 plus 1/3?+
5/6. The denominators 2 and 3 have a common denominator of 6, which turns the sum into 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator does that rewrite for you and shows the decimal equivalent, roughly 0.833333.
Why do you flip the second fraction when dividing?+
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, so 3/4 ÷ 1/2 becomes 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4, which simplifies to 3/2. The calculator applies the flip automatically — just choose divide.
Can I use whole numbers or mixed numbers?+
Whole numbers work directly: enter the number as the numerator and 1 as the denominator, so 2 is 2/1. Mixed numbers need converting to improper fractions first — 2 1/3 becomes 7/3 (multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator).
How do I add mixed numbers like 2 1/3 + 1/2?+
Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction first, then enter it. For 2 1/3, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 2 × 3 + 1 = 7, so it becomes 7/3. Entering 7/3 + 1/2 gives 17/6. To turn that back into a mixed number, divide 17 by 6 to get 2 remainder 5, which is 2 5/6.
What is 3/4 as a decimal?+
0.75 — you divide the numerator by the denominator. Every result in this calculator shows its decimal equivalent underneath the fraction automatically, so you never have to do that division by hand.
How do I turn a fraction into a decimal?+
Divide the numerator by the denominator. Every result here already shows its decimal equivalent underneath the fraction, so 5/8 is displayed alongside 0.625 with no extra step.
Is this fraction calculator free?+
Yes. It is completely free with no signup required.
